Most freshmen are happy just to see the court or field, but the class of 2024 has made an immediate impact on fall sports teams. Here are a few of the freshman stepping up this season.

Zach Frank, Football

Why did you join football?

“My dad played in college, and it’s always been in our family.”

Is there a big difference between playing in junior high vs. high school?

“Yeah there’s a huge difference. In junior high as a seventh grader we were only playing against eighth graders which is just one grade, but as a freshman you are going up against three grades higher. They are all bigger competition, more athletic, stronger and faster.”

Have you improved a lot since junior high?

“I would hope so, but I’m not really sure.”

How are you contributing to varsity?

“Giving them a good look in practice so that they can get better and win on Fridays.”

Is there any extra pressure being a freshman playing with the older kids?

“Not really, because all the upperclassmen are very welcoming, and we all have a certain friendship where we don’t really consider it freshman and seniors. We are all one team.”

Sienna Jones, Cross Country

What made you want to join Cross Country?

“My dad ran Cross Country, and I just thought that it would be fun.”

Did you notice a big difference between running it in junior high versus high school?

“Yeah, it seems like everyone is a lot more supportive in high school than in junior high.”

Do you think that you have improved a lot since junior high?

“Yeah, I was really slow in junior high.”

How are you contributing to the varsity team?

“I’m the second runner for our team.”

Is there a lot of pressure being a freshman and running alongside the older kids?

“I thought that there would be, but now that I’m actually running with them, no.”

Kaci Meseke, Volleyball

What made you want to play volleyball?

“I really enjoy playing it. It’s really fun.”

Is there a big difference between playing it in junior high versus high school?

“It’s a lot faster than it was in junior high, and you learn a lot more.”

Do you think that you have improved a lot since junior high?

“Yes!”

How are you contributing to the varsity squad?

“I hit front row.”

Is there a lot of extra pressure being a freshman and playing with the older kids?

“Not a whole lot.”

Bailey Tharman, Tennis

What made you want to join tennis?

“All the coaches and the people were really nice, and they supported me. I really like tennis because you are always on your feet, and I just really like it.”

Have you improved a lot since practices during the summer?

“Yeah, especially my forehands.”

How are you contributing to the varsity squad?

“I support them and cheer them on.”

Is there a lot of extra pressure being a freshman and playing alone alongside the older kids?

Yeah kind of, because I want to be as good as them.”
