Future Farmers of America and Future Homemakers of America were both strong at WHS in 1983, and the clubs continue under different names today.
Future Farmers of America is now the National FFA organization. While keeping the original FFA letters, the organization works to serve more students than farmers, including a broad range of careers related to agriculture.
Future Homemakers of America continues as FCCLA, or Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.
The FHA organization, begun in 1945 to teach teenage girls how to keep house for their future husbands, changed its name in 1999 to Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. The organization called the term “homemakers” hopelessly outdated, and hoped to attract a larger number of students to it’s organization.
The change has certainly worked for Wabaunsee, which has large numbers in FCCLA every year.
