Sports Briefs | Basketball teams move to second round of sub-state

Substate basketball has officially started — The #7-seed girls team faced the #2-seed Ell-Saline Cardinals Monday. The girls proved resilient, defeating the 14-5 team by 10 points.

The girls will continue their postseason march, playing the St. Marys Bears tonight at 6 p.m. at Republic County High School in Belleville. If they win, they will advance to the championship at 5:30 p.m. Saturday to face either the 18-2 Valley Heights or the 11-9 Bennington Bulldogs.

The boys basketball team won on Tuesday night, defeating Valley Heights 53-40.

At 6 p.m. Friday, they will take on 16-5 Salina-Sacred Heart in the semifinals at Republic County High School. The winner will go on to play either St. Marys or Bennington Saturday at 7 p.m. — the winner earning a trip to state the following week in Manhattan.

Johnson competes at state wrestling

Weston Johnson — a wrestler in the 113 weight class — competed at state. He won his first match by pin in the 3rd round against Ethan Lif from Council Grove.

Johnson said he was excited for the opening match, as they had wrestled against one another in junior high.

In his second match, he lost a tough bout with Tate Weimer of Hoxie, who was the eventual state champion.

Weston went to the consolation bracket, feeling a bit upset but still optimistic. “If I want to place, I have to go hard and not give up,” he said.

Unfortunately, he lost to Cade Osbourn of Kingman. “It was a good match, but I was really tired.”

Johnson said he felt good about his performance at state. “On the second day I did pretty good, and not many people get to go to state. It’s nice and it’s a cool experience.”
