WHS students and staff love scary movies. We asked a few of them to share their favorite horror experiences and recommend some of their favorites.
Junior Miguel Hernandez
What was the scariest movie you’ve ever seen?
“The scariest movie I’ve ever seen was “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” or “The Conjuring.” I watched both of these movies at a young age. I was probably like seven. It was horrifying.”
What do you like about scary movies?
“I like being scared because it’s a thrill. You never know what to expect. I always expect the worst but sometimes good does come out of it.”
Do you have a hard time going to sleep after watching a scary movie?
“I usually curl up in a ball because I’m scared that someone will grab at my feet at night.”
Sophomore Ava Huske
What was the scariest movie you’ve ever seen?
“It would probably be one of the “Paranormal Activity” movies. They are pretty good.”
What do you like about scary movies?
“Probably the thrill of it.”
Sophomore Harley Ridder
What was the scariest movie you’ve ever seen?
“Smile, because it’s terrifying.”
What do you hate about scary movies?
“The jump scares. Every time they get me. I also hide and scream every time.”
Do you have a hard time going to sleep after watching a scary movie?
“Yes. I have to watch little kid movies after watching a horror movie because they are so scary.”
Secretary Jessica Imthurn
What was the scariest movie you’ve ever seen?
“I would have to say “The Quiet Place,” because they don’t talk through the whole movie and so the jump scares were even worse.”
What do you hate about scary movies?
“I will always watch the movie with my fingers in my ears first because I can visually see but I can’t hear the screaming and stuff and then I will go back and watch it again knowing the jump scares ahead of time. So I’m not as scared as the first time.”
Do you have a hard time going to sleep after watching a scary movie?
“Since my side is closer to all the doors, before I go to bed I will make sure that all the doors are shut and then I will put a blanket over my head.”
English teacher Brendan Praeger
What was the scariest movie you’ve ever seen?
“The scariest experience watching a movie was watching the Blair witch project. I was a freshman in high school. I think it was 1999. We were on our way to a basketball game. My friends and I were watching it in the back of their van on a tiny little VHS player. It was a black and white film so it was scary-looking and it was a documentary. We didn’t know if it was real or not because it was before we had the internet to look it up. Halfway through the movie the van had a flat tire so we were stuck in the middle of nowhere on the way to Greensburg, Kansas. We just thought about those witches. Anybody who hasn’t seen it should watch it if they like horror films.”
Why do you like scary movies?
“I think I like it for the same reason I like fantasy. I like the idea that anything can happen and it’s kinda detached from reality. But I also like that horror movies comment on society, like zombie movies about consumerism. The Purge is kinda about politics, but through murdering people. I think that stuff is interesting.”
Since you have kids, how or when do you find time to watch horror movies?
“My movie habits have changed since having children. We recently watched “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and that was even pushing it. One of my kids liked it but it was a lot for the other kid. My wife doesn’t like scary movies very much.”
Do you have a hard time going to sleep after watching a scary movie?
“I don’t. I’m able to shut off that part, although I have had nightmares about things that I’ve watched.”
Junior Tyler Anderson
Why do you love scary movies?
“I like how it scares my little sister. I enjoy seeing her jump.”
What are your favorites?
“I like the Halloween movies. I love when Mike Myers is just standing around and suddenly disappears. I love the suspense.”
Do you remember the first scary movie you watched?
“I’ve been around them so long I can’t remember the first one.”
