Cheer to compete at state

The Wabaunsee cheer squad will be competing at state for the first time Saturday.

A squad of 12 cheerleaders will compete in Game Day Cheer, which includes three categories: band chant, crowd leading and fight song. WHS competes with 12 other 2A schools. All other classes will compete at the same location.

Senior Danielle Murphy feels good, yet nervous. “I’m nervous about the outcome and seeing how good other teams are.”

Junior Alexus Ford is excited to compete in her first state cheer competition. “I’m excited to see how our first experience goes and show the judges how hard we worked this year. I think our strongest strength will be the cheer performance.”

Coach Cheryl Lewis has a lot of faith in the team. “They seem to come through when they need to,” Lewis said.

The biggest challenge is getting enough time to practice. “Since everyone on the team is very involved with other teams and clubs, it’s hard to find time to practice,” Lewis said.

Prelims start at 9:05 Saturday at the Stormont Vail Event Center in Topeka. Band chant is first, followed by Fight Song at 10:35 and Crowd leading at 12:09
