5 wrestlers place at Herington

Five wrestlers placed at the meet Saturday at Herington. The boys team placed 14th out of 18 other teams.

Junior Weston Johnson placed second. Johnson had victories over Hillsboro’s Anthony Fickes, Leon Bluestem’s Laythan Vice, Abilene’s Zane Macoubrie and Jeff West’s Cooper Pieschl.

Junior Wyatt Wurtz finished third in his weight class, beating Marion’s Landon Bryant by fall over. It was Wurtz’s first meet after joining the team earlier that week. With just one practice to prepare, he found a way to get a win, going 1-2 on the day. “I did ‘ight,” Wurtz said.

Brandyn Glotzbach earned his first win in the season against Hillsboro’s Evan Jones.

On the girls side, junior Sophia Castillo placed third in the #105 class. Castillo beat Jeff West’s Josalene Schnacker and Central Burden’s Aubrey Miller.

“I faced some pretty good competition and I learned a lot from it. I hope to improve for this upcoming meet at St. Marys,” Castillo said.

Junior Sienna Jones also placed third. Jones overthrew Chaparral’s Ella White, Chase County’s Dana Maddox and Council Grove’s Brenah Cannon.

Sophomore Emily Meyer placed fourth. Meyer defeated Stafford’s Morgan Gunter and Council Grove’s Casey McDiffett.

Saturday, the girls will wrestle at St. Marys and boys will travel to Marysville.

Basketball swept by St. Marys

Basketball faced off against St. Marys Friday in the Chargers first game since winter break. 

The girls lost 42-22. Junior Karli Meseke led the team in scoring with 11 points.The girls fell to 1-4 on the season.

The boys lost a hard-fought double overtime matchup, losing 64-67. The Chargers were up by 15 points at one point, but were unable to seal the victory, falling to 2-3 on the year. 

The Chargers travel to Silver Lake Tuesday and face Rock Creek at home Friday. Rock Creek beat both Charger teams before winter break in close games, and the Chargers will look to get back on track at their Winter Royalty matchup.
