Wabaunsee’s state qualifiers all went 1-2 at the state tournament, losing in consolation rounds.
Sophia Castillo wrestled in the 105 weight class. Her first match was against Payton Burton of Leon-Bluestem, losing 9-2. Her second matchup was against Pratt’s Lilly Herman, winning 6-0. To finish her season she wrestled Winfield’s Hannah Selle, losing 11-0.
“It was a good experience, although it didn’t end the way I wanted it to,” Castillo said. “I learned a lot to take into next season and I’m proud to represent the girls wrestling team.”
Sienna Jones began the tournament against Grace Johns of Minneapolis, losing 2-0. Her next round was against Kassidy Fox of Cherokee-Southwest winning 13-1. To end the season, Jones wrestled Brylie Schaub of Fort Scott, losing 5-2.
“Going to state was a stepping stone for next year and for the future of the girls wrestling team. Win or lose, every match this season was a learning opportunity,” Jones said.
At the boys tournament, junior Alex Beggs defeated St. Hohn’s Caden McCandless 3-0 in the opening round, but lost to Hill City’s Aiden Amerin 8-0 in the second round. He finished the season with a 7-4 loss to Russel’s Brayden Strobel.
This was Beggs’ first year qualifying to state. “I went in knowing that it would be a tougher match and I knew I would have to wrestle smart,” Beggs said.
