Government classes propose changes
Jess Rutledge’s senior classes aren’t just studying government, they have been attempting to do some governing of their own. For the last few years, Rutledge has given seniors the opportunity to propose and debate bills of their own in an effort to improve the school. Rutledge said “I wanted them to learn what the legislative process was like; all the arguments and compromises that are made.”
Exchange students experience new cultures
Foreign exchange student Ilyana Tertzanlis came to WHS from Dortmund, Germany. Illyana recently spoke to The Charger about the process of becoming a foreign exchange student, and her observations of school in the U.S. Over the summer Falisha Willier traveled to Costa Rica as an exchange student. She is considered by the district as the first WHS student to go to a country as a foreign exchange student. Traveling to the country for an entire week, she visited many different locations and learned many new things about Costa Rica.
WHS girls tennis returns lots of experience
The tennis team starts the WHS fall sports season with a lot of both players and experience. The girls tennis team has 18 members, 14 returning from last season. Head coach Brendan Praeger said he has high expectations for this season because so much of the team has previous experience, which wasn’t the case in his first four years as coach. Nine of the current players got varsity matches last season.
WHS Football prepares for first jamboree
Instead of a traditional scrimmage, WHS football will participate in its first ever Football Jamboree Friday night in Lyndon. The 2019 season will be the first year ever that a jamboree will be allowed in Kansas. WHS will compete against the Lyndon Tigers and the St. Mary’s Bears in game sessions that should last around 30 minutes each.
