To celebrate the end of a year that we are all happy to put behind us, the Charger staff compiled the ten biggest WHS stories of the 2020. From sports to elections to unexpected plagues — it was quite a year.
8. Girls basketball returns to state
Winter sports season started this weekend with basketball at home against Axtell and the wrestling team faced Abilene, Sabetha, and Ottawa in a home quad.
Girls basketball won easily against Axtell 53-14. Junior Lauren Schutter was the Chargers leading scorer with 20 points and also 14 rebounds. Senior Madisyn Wertzberger scored 11 points and 8 rebounds. Freshman Karli Meseke scores 9 points as well.
Charger basketball tips off postseason play tonight at home, as the girls face Kansas City Christian 7 p.m. at home.
The Chargers enter sub-state as the top seed with a 16-3 record. Eight seed KC Christian enters at 3-17.
The basketball page in "Welcome to the Jungle," the 1991 Charger yearbook, features two legendary coaches reaching milestones. Girls coach Brenda Holaday reached 100 career wins, while boys coach Steve Murray hit 200. Girls basketball coach Trevor Keller talks to Laurel Barber, Adam Miller and Falisha Willier about the girl's basketball season, his high school glory days and finding a job at Wabaunsee. The team opens the season at Axtell tonight, and competes at home Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in the Wabaunsee Invitational.
Winter sports season heats up this week with basketball at Axtell Friday and Wrestling at Mission Valley Saturday. The Charger spoke to Varsity and JV players from each sport for a preview of the season.

Senior Madelyn Hutley had many in attendance to watch her sign her National Letter of Intent to play basketball for Washburn University.
Hutley signed Friday afternoon in the WHS commons. Speakers including summer coaches, WHS coaches and her mother, principal Jan Hutley, spoke about her time at WHS and her love of basketball.
“As her mom, I’m most grateful and proud of who she is on the inside — her sassy, spirited, no-nonsense personality. I’m not gonna lie, it’s been difficult to tame over the years. But that same personality is what makes her a joy to be around,” Hutley said. “We have a wonderful time together, and I also think that’s what makes her a great player.”
Trevor Keller looks to continue the success of the WHS girls basketball team.
Keller was approved by the board last Monday. He will replace Shanna Perine as the head girls basketball coach and will also fill the school psychologist position.
Keller attended Kansas State University where he dual majored and received degrees in psychology and kinesiology. After he graduated from Kansas State, he attended Emporia State University and received his masters degree, along with an education specialist degree in school psychology.
At the board meeting Monday night, the USD 329 school board approved multiple new hires for WHS, including a FCS teacher, head boys and girls basketball coaches and a district tech director. The Chargers basketball team is #ALLIN for the state tournament. The Chargers enter state as the top seed at 20-3 and face 9-12 Heritage Christian 3 p.m. Thursday at Gross Memorial Stadium in Hays.
