For this week's throwback Thursday (even though it's posting a day late), we go to academics from 1991. In addition to languages, students competed in forensics and journalism competitions.
Student journalists in the mid '70s faced some of the same issues journalists today faced, although their struggles with technology are definitely different.
Wabaunsee journalism earned seven regional journalism championships last month, and qualified 21 entries to the state competition later this semester.
The Kansas Scholastic Press Association regional competition, which usually features both online and in-person competitions, was completed completely online in late February. Contests include writing, editing, photography, design and cartooning competitions.
The 2020 Kansas Scholastic Press Association state competition looked a little different than usual, but WHS journalist still captured some awards.
Instead of traveling to the University of Kansas, the writing competitions took place online in mid-April. All students who placed at the regional competition in February were eligible to compete.
Three WHS students captured state championships. Eleanor Badeker in Copy Editing, Karlee Feyh in Advertising (her entry is pictured above) and Emma Frey in Editorial writing.
Wabaunsee placed first as a team at the Kansas Scholastic Press Association Regional Journalism Competition February 19.
The contests, which consist of writing, editing, illustrating, photography and design, pit students against other high school journalists around the state. Wabaunsee competed in the 1-2A Harvest regional against Ellsworth, Flint Hills Christian School, Hope, Kansas City Christian and Lincoln. WHS placed first with 17 state qualifiers.
WHS students placed first in four events: Eleanor Badeker in both copy editing and news writing, Laurel Barber in sports writing and Emma Frey in editorial writing.
The Charger staff is reserve champion of the Kansas State Fair Scholastic Print Competiton.
The competition, which takes place each year at the Kansas State Fair, requires teams of five high school students to complete a 4-page newsletter in one day. The teams have from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. to interview, write, edit, photograph and design the newsletter. Two stories are assigned and the students come up with two others on their own.
WHS journalism achieved five awards at the Kansas Scholastic Press Association state contest Saturday morning, including one state champion. In the write-off contests, students receive a page of quotes and information and must write a story in 90 minutes.
